Julien cria imagens sobre a sociedade e escreve sobre a vida social das imagens.
É um ilustrador que mora entre Montreal, QC e Cambridge, Reino Unido, oferecendo trabalho pro bono todos os anos para movimentos que trabalham para apoiar, defender e melhorar a vida de pessoas LGBTQIA+ e/ou BIPOC.
Actualmente estudante de doutoramento em antropologia social na Universidade de Cambridge, o seu projecto de investigação aborda a questão da avaliação na indústria criativa e os processos interaccionais, cognitivos e computacionais através dos quais formas visuais específicas são imbuídas de aspectos económicos, estéticos, políticos e valores éticos. Ele está particularmente interessado em como as formas de ver humanos e máquinas interagem na formação de tais valores e escreve um boletim informativo sobre as relações entre criatividade e capitalismo. Julien creates images about society and writes about the social life of images.
He’s an illustrator living between Montreal, QC and Cambridge, UK, offering some pro-bono work each year for grassroot movement working to support, defend and improve lives of LGBTQIA+ and/or BIPOC people
Currently a PhD student in social anthropology at the University of Cambridge, his research project addresses the question of evaluation in the creative industry, and the interactional, cognitive and computational processes through which specific visual forms become imbued with economic, aesthetic, political and ethical values. He’s particularly interested in how human and machine ways of seeing interact in shaping such values and writes a newsletter about the relations between creativity and capitalism. [PT] OS ARTISTAS DO TRAVA-LÍNGUAS: MARIANA MALHÃO
Nasceu em Coimbra, em 1994. Frequentou o curso de Design de Comunicação na faculdade de Belas Artes do Porto finalizando com um estágio na Oficina Arara onde surgiu o interesse pela ilustração e projetos de auto edição. Atualmente trabalha como ilustradora freelancer adaptando o seu trabalho a diferentes meios, desde o editorial à pintura mural, passando pela cerâmica. É co-organizadora da feira de edição independente Sábado-Feira (Porto) e faz parte da galeria Senhora Presidenta (Porto).

Born in Coimbra, 1994, attended the Communication Design course at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Porto, finishing with an internship at Oficina Arara where her interest in illustration and self-publishing projects arose. She currently works as a freelance illustrator adapting her work to different media, from editorial to mural painting, including ceramics. She is co-organizer of the independent publishing fair Sábado-Feira (Porto) and is part of the Senhora Presidenta gallery (Porto).

[PT] Uma das mais famosas características do Douro são as suas vinhas em socalcos que surgiram não só pela necessidade de aumentar o terreno agrícola mas também para contrariar o declive existente. No entanto, nestas zonas, surge a impossibilidade de efetuar vindima mecânica, pelo que tem que ser feita à mão, cacho a cacho. Uma função extremamente exigente mas, ao mesmo tempo, muito gratificante pela história e tradição daquele que é Património Mundial da UNESCO.
[EN] One of the most famous characteristics of the Douro is its terraced vineyards, which emerged not only because of the need to increase the agricultural land but also to counteract the existing slope. However, in these areas, it is impossible to carry out mechanical harvesting, so it has to be done by hand, bunch by bunch. An extremely demanding function but, at the same time, very rewarding for the history and tradition of what is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

[PT] O clima no Douro é muito especial e as temperaturas são, por vezes, muito extremas, chegando a haver amplitudes térmicas de 20º num só dia. Desta forma é importante iniciar a vindima bem cedo enquanto a neblina ainda cobre o rio e as temperaturas ainda estão amenas.
[EN] The climate in the Douro is very special and the temperatures are sometimes very extreme, with temperature variations of 20º in a single day. Therefore, it is important to start the harvest very early while the fog still covers the river and the temperatures are still mild.

Com as alterações climáticas e aumento das temperaturas médias que temos vindo a sentir, a necessidade de antecipar a colheita das uvas foi-se evidenciando cada vez mais e, por esta altura, estamos a dar início à nossa 3ª semana de vindimas.
